Tomatillos are related to tomatoes but are faster-growing, more heat-tolerant, and far more productive. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost at 21–27°C. Transplant after all frost risk passes into well-drained, fertile soil with pH 6.0–7.5. Unlike tomatoes, tomatillos can handle slightly alkaline soil. Space 60–90cm apart in rows 90cm wide; plants grow large and sprawling. Tomatillos require two or more plants from different genetic sources for cross-pollination — a single plant will flower prolifically but set little fruit. Support with tomato cages or stakes. Water consistently at 2.5–4cm per week; tomatillos are more drought-tolerant than tomatoes but produce better fruit with regular moisture. Fertilize at planting with balanced fertilizer and side-dress with phosphorus once flowering begins. They are vigorous and largely self-managing once established.
