Spinach demands fertile, moisture-retentive soil at pH 6.5–7.0 — it is more sensitive to acidic conditions than most vegetables and will bolt prematurely in soil below pH 6.0. Incorporate generous compost and a nitrogen-rich fertiliser (21-0-0) at 100g per square metre before sowing. Direct-sow seeds 1.5cm deep in rows 30cm apart; thin to 10–15cm apart once seedlings emerge. Spinach germinates best at soil temperatures of 7–18°C — at higher temperatures, germination becomes erratic and slow. Sow as soon as soil can be worked in spring, 4–6 weeks before last frost. Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist — 2.5cm per week; drought stress triggers immediate bolting. Apply liquid nitrogen fertiliser (fish emulsion or blood meal tea) every 2–3 weeks to keep leaves dark green and tender. Provide 30% shade cloth once day length exceeds 14 hours to delay bolting. Succession-sow every 2 weeks in spring and again starting in late summer for autumn harvest.
