Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Cucumbers need fertile, well-draining soil at pH 6.0–7.0, rich in organic matter. Incorporate a generous 8cm layer of compost and a balanced fertiliser (10-10-10) at 200g per square metre before planting. Transplant seedlings 45–60cm apart for bush types, 30–45cm apart for trellised vining types. Plant at soil level — do not bury deeper than the nursery pot. Soil temperature must be at least 18°C; cucumbers transplanted into cool soil sulk and may never recover fully. Water frequently and consistently — at least 2.5cm per week, preferably more in hot weather, always at the base to prevent fungal disease. Drought stress causes bitter fruit, so mulch heavily. Feed with a balanced fertiliser at transplant; once vines are running, switch to a potassium-rich feed every two weeks. Provide a sturdy trellis at least 1.8m tall for vining varieties — trellising improves air circulation, reduces disease pressure, and makes harvesting far easier. Train vines by loosely tying with soft twine.
