Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Tulips require a cold vernalisation period — bulbs must experience 12–16 weeks of temperatures below 9°C to bloom; in warm climates, pre-chill bulbs in the refrigerator (away from ethylene-producing fruit) for 6 weeks before planting. Plant in well-draining, light, fertile soil with pH 6.0–7.0. Sandy loam amended with compost is ideal; heavy clay must be broken up with grit. Plant at a depth of 3 times the bulb diameter — typically 15–20 cm — with the flat side facing outward. Space 10–15 cm apart. Water in after planting but do not water again until spring growth appears. After flowering, allow all foliage to yellow completely before removing — this is essential for bulb recharging. Feed with a bulb fertiliser (high in potassium and phosphorus) as growth emerges in spring. Lift bulbs in warm climates after foliage dies and store dry until autumn replanting.
