Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) requires the same strongly acidic, humus-rich, moisture-retentive conditions as blueberry — a pH of 4.5–5.5 is essential. The plant fails completely in alkaline soils. Grow in partial to full shade under acid-loving trees such as pine, oak, or rhododendron in a woodland-style setting. Incorporate large amounts of pine bark, peat, or decomposed leaf mould into the planting area. Space plants 30–45 cm apart; they slowly spread by underground runners to form a low mat (10–15 cm tall). Keep consistently moist — wintergreen is susceptible to drought. Feed annually with an ericaceous fertiliser in early spring. Container growing in ericaceous compost in semi-shaded positions is very effective. The plant produces small white urn-shaped flowers in midsummer followed by the persistent bright red berries that remain decorative through winter into the following spring.

Common Pests & Problems

Wintergreen is generally very resistant to pests and diseases. Phytophthora root rot occurs in waterlogged soils — ensure good drainage and avoid planting in low-lying areas. Soil pH drift toward alkalinity is the most common cause of failure — plants show yellowing leaves (iron chlorosis); test pH annually and acidify as needed with sulfur or acidifying liquid feed. Vine weevil adults notch leaf margins and larvae feed on roots in container-grown plants; apply beneficial nematodes (Steinernema kraussei) to containers in late summer. Bird pecking of berries is the primary 'pest' issue — provide netting protection if berry crops are desired for human harvest.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest wintergreen berries in late autumn through winter when they reach full red colour and have a mild, sweet, minty flavour. Berries persist on the plant for months, so can be harvested from autumn through spring as needed. Pick by hand, selecting fully red, firm berries. Fresh berries can be used immediately or refrigerated for 2–3 weeks. For herbal tea, harvest fresh leaves year-round (the plant is evergreen) — steep in just-boiled water for 5 minutes. Leaves can be dried slowly at room temperature for storage; dried leaves retain their methyl salicylate (wintergreen oil) content well for 1 year in airtight containers.

Gaultheria procumbens is the primary species; 'Big Berry' is a cultivar selected for larger than typical berries with improved flavour and a more compact spreading habit. 'Very Berry' is another selected form with abundant berry production, often used specifically for edible harvest rather than purely ornamental use. 'Dart's Red Giant' produces particularly vivid red berries and a slightly more vigorous spreading habit than the standard species. In mild climates, Gaultheria shallon (salal) is a much larger relative (1.5–2 m) producing clusters of small dark berries; it shares the same cultural requirements and is harvested commercially for its foliage used in the cut flower trade.
