Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Blackberries are vigorous, thorny (or thornless) perennial brambles that establish quickly and produce heavily. Plant bare-root canes in early spring or container plants anytime, in well-drained, fertile loam with pH 5.5–7.0. Space erect varieties 90cm apart, trailing/semi-erect types 1.5–2m apart, in rows 2.5–3m wide. Install a sturdy T-bar trellis before planting for trailing types. Erect varieties may stand without support. Incorporate generous compost and a balanced fertilizer at planting. Blackberries fruit on second-year canes (floricanes) — the plant produces vegetative canes (primocanes) one year and fruiting canes the next. Prune out floricanes immediately after harvest. In fall, tip primocanes at 1m to encourage lateral branching for more fruiting spurs. Water at 2.5–4cm per week and mulch heavily with wood chips to suppress the aggressive suckering.
