Zucchini grows in almost any well-draining soil but performs best at pH 6.0–7.5 with generous compost incorporation. Create mounded hills 90–120cm in diameter, spacing hills 1.2–1.5m apart for bush types — each hill will support one to two plants. Sow seeds 2–3cm deep or transplant seedlings at nursery pot depth. Zucchini is extremely frost-sensitive; do not plant until all frost risk has passed and soil reaches 18°C. Water regularly and deeply — 2.5–4cm per week — at the base of the plant, never on leaves. The enormous leaves lose significant water in hot weather, so check soil moisture every 2 days in summer. Apply a balanced fertiliser (10-10-10) at planting, then a nitrogen-rich side dressing (21-0-0) every 4 weeks to support vigorous growth. Hand-pollinate with a paintbrush in cool or still weather if bees are absent — female flowers have a tiny immature fruit at the base. One or two plants is typically enough for a family of four.
