Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Boysenberries (Rubus ursinus x idaeus hybrid) require deep, well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 5.5–6.5. Work generous compost into a raised bed or mounded row before planting — boysenberries are heavy feeders and drainage is critical to prevent root rot. Plant bare-root canes in early spring, spreading roots over a small soil mound at the center of the planting hole. Set the crown 1–2 inches below the surface. Space plants 5–8 feet apart in rows 8–10 feet apart. Provide a sturdy trellis system — a T-bar with 3 horizontal wires works well. Train new canes upward; they will fruit the following season.
