Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Brussels sprouts require the longest growing season of any common vegetable — plan for 90–180 days from transplant to harvest. Start seeds indoors 4–6 months before the first expected autumn frost. Transplant to deeply prepared, fertile, firm soil at pH 6.0–7.5; firm soil is essential — loose soil causes loose, 'blown' sprouts. Incorporate generous compost and 200g per square metre of balanced fertiliser. Space plants 60–75cm apart in rows 75–90cm apart. Plant slightly deeper than the nursery pot for a strong stem. Water consistently — 2.5–4cm per week. Brussels sprouts are heavy nitrogen feeders; side-dress with blood meal or ammonium nitrate every 4 weeks through the growing season. As plants grow tall (they reach 90cm), stake each plant firmly — they become top-heavy. Remove lower yellowing leaves as the plant develops. Flavour dramatically improves after the first frost converts starches to sugars — plan the harvest schedule around frost dates.
