Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is the fastest major food crop available — complete from seed to seed in as little as 70–90 days under ideal conditions, with green manure crops ready to incorporate in 30–45 days. It tolerates poor, acidic soils with pH 4.8–6.5 where other crops fail, though it performs best in well-draining, moderately fertile loam. Direct sow after the last spring frost or from midsummer for an autumn crop, drilling at 2–3 cm depth in rows 15–20 cm apart, or broadcasting at 55–75 kg/ha for a cover crop. Buckwheat germinates rapidly at soil temperatures above 10°C and quickly shades out weeds, making it an excellent smother crop. It requires minimal fertilisation — excessive nitrogen delays flowering. Water moderately during establishment but tolerates dry conditions reasonably well. It is killed by the first hard frost, making autumn timing important for grain production.

Common Pests & Problems

Buckwheat has very few serious pest or disease problems — one of the primary reasons it is valued as an organic cover and rotation crop. Aphids occasionally colonise flowering shoots but natural predator populations (which buckwheat flowers powerfully attract) usually control them without intervention. Stem canker (Rhizoctonia solani) can cause damping off in wet, cold conditions; sow into warm soil and avoid overwatering. Tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) pierces developing seeds causing them to shrivel; in severe infestations apply kaolin clay. Buckwheat is sometimes attacked by Japanese beetle adults on the flowers; hand-pick in small plantings. Deer will browse young plants readily — use exclusion fencing if deer pressure is high.

Harvest & Storage

Buckwheat is tricky to harvest for grain as seeds ripen unevenly — lower seeds on the plant may shatter and fall while upper seeds are still green. Harvest when 75% of seeds have turned dark brown-grey, cutting at ground level on a dry day. Immediately spread on tarps or thresh by beating over a container, as mature seeds shed easily. Winnow to remove chaff, then dry seeds to below 13% moisture before storage. Stored in airtight containers, buckwheat groats keep for 1 year at room temperature and 2 years frozen. Buckwheat flour is best freshly milled; whole groats stay fresher than flour.

Popular Varieties

Mancan is a widely grown Canadian variety selected for improved yield, reduced shattering (seed loss before harvest), and consistent maturity — the most reliable choice for grain production. Common Buckwheat (straight species F. esculentum) is the most widely available and most commonly grown for both grain and bee forage, available from most seed suppliers without a variety name. Tartary Buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) is a different species adapted to harsher, cooler, higher-altitude conditions — it has a more bitter flavour and is grown primarily in the Himalayas and China. Japanese Buckwheat varieties bred for soba noodle production (such as Kitawase Botan) produce a finer, more fragrant grain specifically selected to yield the characteristic flavour of high-quality soba.
