Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Butternut squash needs a long, warm growing season — 90–110 days of consistent heat. Direct sow after last frost when soil reaches 18°C, planting 3 seeds per hill at 2.5cm depth, thinning to the strongest plant. Space hills 120–150cm apart. Alternatively, start indoors in biodegradable pots 3 weeks before transplanting. Amend soil with generous amounts of aged compost and well-rotted manure to pH 6.0–7.0. As heavy feeders, butternut squash benefit from a 10-10-10 fertilizer at planting, transitioning to a low-nitrogen, higher-phosphorus formula once flowering begins. Water deeply at 4–5cm per week, always at the base. Black plastic mulch significantly improves performance by warming soil and retaining moisture. After harvest, cure fruits at 27–30°C for 10 days in the sun or a warm shed to harden the skin — this step is critical for long storage.
