Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Chrysanthemums perform best in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Work compost 8–10 inches deep before planting, as mums develop extensive, fibrous root systems. Space plants 18–24 inches apart to ensure good airflow, which is critical for disease prevention. Plant at or slightly above soil level to prevent crown rot. Water consistently — roughly 1 inch per week — keeping moisture at the root zone rather than overhead. Mums are photoperiod-sensitive; they initiate flower buds when nights lengthen in late summer. The key cultural technique is pinching: remove the growing tip when plants reach 6 inches, then again every time new growth reaches 4–6 inches, continuing until mid-July (in zone 6). Each pinch creates 2–3 new branches, building a dense, floriferous mound. Apply balanced fertilizer monthly through summer. Stop feeding by late August to harden plants for fall. After the first killing frost, cut stems to 4–6 inches and mulch heavily over the crown to protect roots over winter.
