Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Corn is wind-pollinated, which dictates the fundamental rule of corn growing: never plant in a single row. Plant in blocks of at least 4 rows x 4 plants (minimum 16 plants) or pollination will be poor, resulting in gappy, partially filled ears. Grow in deep, fertile, well-drained soil at pH 6.0–6.8. Incorporate 8–10cm of compost and a nitrogen-rich fertiliser (21-0-0) at 200g per square metre before sowing. Sow seeds 4cm deep and 30cm apart in rows 75–90cm apart once soil temperature reaches 18°C. Corn is a rapid, prodigious feeder — side-dress with ammonium nitrate (100g per linear metre of row) when plants are 30cm tall and again when tassels appear. Water deeply and consistently — 2.5–4cm per week — and critically never allow drought stress during silking and tasselling or pollination will fail. Mulch to conserve moisture.
