Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Hellebores (Helleborus spp.) are among the most refined shade-garden perennials. They prefer deep, humus-rich, well-draining but moisture-retentive soil with a pH of 7.0–8.0 — they perform best in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions, unlike most shade perennials. Incorporate generous amounts of garden compost and ground limestone into acidic soils before planting. Space plants 45–60 cm apart in partial to full shade under deciduous trees — they flower in late winter when the tree canopy is bare, getting the full winter light they need. Plant with the crown at soil level or just below. Water well through the first growing season; established hellebores are drought-tolerant in shaded positions. Feed with a balanced granular fertiliser in early spring as growth resumes. Remove all old leaves in January–February, cutting them back at the base — this prevents leaf spot spread to new flowers and opens up the display.
