Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Bok choy is a fast-maturing, cool-season Asian green that thrives in 10–20°C temperatures and bolts rapidly in heat. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil at pH 6.0–7.0, rich in organic matter. Sow seeds directly 6mm deep in rows 30cm apart, thinning to 20–25cm apart for full-size plants, or 10cm apart for baby bok choy (ready in 30 days). Alternatively, start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting in cooler climates for spring crops. Water consistently and generously — 2.5–4cm per week — as any moisture stress triggers immediate bolting. Bok choy is a heavy feeder: apply a nitrogen-rich liquid fertiliser (fish emulsion) every 10 days for rapid, tender growth. Provide 30% shade cloth if temperatures exceed 20°C to delay bolting. Plant for spring or autumn/winter harvest; summer production is extremely difficult without climate control. Succession-sow every 2–3 weeks through the cool season.
