Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Tropical hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) demands warm temperatures, full sun, and consistently moist soil. Grow in rich, well-drained soil or premium container mix with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Container culture in 12–18 inch pots works well in temperate climates, allowing overwintering indoors. Plant in the ground only where temperatures remain above 50°F year-round. Water frequently — the rule is to never let the top inch of soil dry out during the growing season. In containers, daily watering is common in summer heat. Feed with a high-potassium fertilizer every 2 weeks from spring through fall; hibiscus is a heavy feeder and will not bloom freely without consistent nutrition. In spring, prune stems back by one-third to encourage branching — flowers form on new growth. Bring containerized plants indoors before temperatures drop below 50°F; place in the brightest available window. Reduce watering in winter but do not let plants completely dry out.
