Largest tree fruit in the world -- can weigh 35kg. A warmth-loving plant that does best between 24°C and 32°C, jackfruit adapts well to tropical and subtropical conditions but cannot tolerate frost. Give it full sun (6-8 hours of direct light daily) and regular watering to keep soil consistently moist, and expect to harvest in roughly 1095-1825 days. A favourite of home orchardists and fruit gardeners, it can be trained, pruned, and shaped to fit most spaces.

Expert Tips

Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a strictly tropical canopy tree requiring a frost-free climate (minimum 15°C year-round) and deep, well-drained loamy soil at pH 6.0–7.5. It cannot tolerate waterlogging — plant on raised ground or mounds in flood-prone areas. Prepare large planting holes (1 m wide, 60 cm deep) filled with a mixture of topsoil, aged compost, and coarse sand. Space trees 8–10 m apart as they spread widely. Newly planted trees require regular watering (2–3 times weekly) for the first year; established trees are moderately drought-tolerant. Fertilize monthly with a balanced tropical fruit fertilizer containing micronutrients during the growing season. Jackfruit trees bear fruit on their trunk and main branches (cauliflory) — do not remove these thick, productive branches. Prune only to remove dead wood and maintain a manageable canopy height for harvesting. Trees begin producing at 3–7 years and may yield 100–200 fruits annually at maturity.

Common Pests & Problems

Jackfruit shoot borer (Diaphania caesalis) causes wilting and die-back of growing tips as larvae tunnel into shoots — cut back affected tips below the tunnel, destroy larvae, and apply neem oil preventively. Rhizopus fruit rot causes rapid soft decay of ripening fruits, particularly after rain damage or insect entry points; harvest promptly at full maturity and handle fruits carefully to prevent skin bruising. Phytophthora root rot can be devastating in poorly drained conditions, causing trunk cankers at the soil line — improve drainage and avoid wetting the trunk base during irrigation. In humid climates, maintain good tree spacing to improve airflow and reduce fungal pressure.

Harvest & Storage

Jackfruit is ready to harvest when the skin spines flatten slightly and the skin color changes from green to yellow-green or yellow-brown, and when tapping the fruit produces a dull hollow sound rather than a sharp ring. Cut the stem with a sharp knife, wearing gloves and old clothes as the white latex sap stains permanently. Unripe jackfruit (harvested green and firm) is used as a meat substitute. Ripe jackfruit stores at room temperature for 3–5 days. Refrigerate cut fruit in sealed containers for up to a week. Both ripe and unripe jackfruit freeze well for up to 2 months.

Popular Varieties

"Honey Gold" is a compact Malaysian cultivar with small- to medium-sized fruits of exceptional sweetness and a thin, non-stringy flesh — ideal for home gardens. "Black Gold" produces large, dark-skinned fruits with very firm, intensely sweet yellow flesh and few seeds. "Dang Rasimi" is a Thai dessert variety producing small, very sweet fruits with minimal latex, making processing far easier. "NS1" is a Malaysian grafted cultivar that begins bearing in 18–24 months — much faster than seedling trees — and produces consistent, high-quality fruit annually.
