Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Jalapenos demand a long, warm season — start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost in a propagation tray at 27–32°C soil temperature. Germination is slow; use a heat mat for best results. Transplant into well-drained loam or sandy loam with pH 6.0–6.8, enriched with compost and a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer worked in 15cm deep. Space plants 45cm apart in rows 60cm wide. Jalapenos are moderate water users — consistent moisture is critical; erratic watering causes blossom drop and misshapen fruit. Aim for 2.5cm per week, switching to drip irrigation to keep foliage dry. Once flowering begins, side-dress with a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer (5-10-10) every 3–4 weeks to encourage fruiting over leafy growth. Pinch the first few flowers to let the plant establish before fruiting. In containers, use at least a 12L pot. Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
