Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) is among the most resilient fruit trees that can be grown — tolerating drought, alkaline soils, high heat, and even brief cold to –15°C once established. It thrives in deep, well-draining soil with a pH of 5.0–8.5, including the highly alkaline conditions that defeat most fruit trees. Plant in full sun — shade dramatically reduces fruiting. Space trees 4–6 metres apart; jujube develops a rounded crown 3–5 metres wide. Water during the first year to establish, then reduce — mature trees survive on rainfall alone in semi-arid climates though irrigation during fruit development improves yield. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring only; excess nitrogen promotes leafy growth over fruiting. Jujube is pest-resistant with minimal spray requirements. It produces suckers readily; remove annually unless propagation is desired. The tree is deciduous, leafing out late in spring.
