Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Kumquats (Fortunella species) are the hardiest members of the citrus family, tolerating brief dips to -5°C and even -8°C for very short durations. They grow best in well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic soil at pH 5.5–6.5. In containers, use a specialist citrus potting mix amended with 20% perlite for drainage. Outdoors, plant in a warm, sheltered, south-facing position in full sun. Container plants are ideal in colder climates as they can overwinter indoors. Water deeply when the top 2–3 cm of soil dries; kumquats are sensitive to both drought (leaf drop) and overwatering (root rot). Feed every 3–4 weeks during the growing season with a slow-release citrus fertilizer containing magnesium and iron to prevent chlorosis; suspend feeding in winter. Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape and remove dead wood. Repot container plants every 2 years in spring. Kumquats are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator.
