Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Lemons are evergreen citrus trees that need warmth year-round and are sensitive to frost below 2°C. In zones 9–11 they grow outdoors; elsewhere container cultivation is the best approach. Plant in the largest manageable container (50–100L) using well-drained, slightly acidic citrus potting mix with pH 5.5–6.5. Position in the warmest, sunniest spot available — south-facing walls reflect additional heat. Feed with a specialized citrus fertilizer (high in nitrogen plus trace elements, especially iron, zinc, and manganese) every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Water regularly but allow the top 3–5cm of soil to dry before re-watering — overwatering is the most common killer of container citrus. Bring containers indoors to a bright, cool (8–15°C) location before temperatures drop below 4°C. Meyer lemon, which is a lemon-mandarin hybrid, is the most cold-tolerant and productive choice for home gardeners.
