Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Lemongrass is a clumping tropical grass that demands heat, humidity, and full sun. In USDA zones 9 and above it grows as a perennial; elsewhere treat as an annual or overwinter indoors. The easiest propagation method is rooting store-bought fresh stalks: place in a glass of water on a sunny windowsill for 2–3 weeks until 5cm roots develop, then pot into well-drained loam with pH 5.5–7.0, rich in organic matter. Transplant outdoors after all frost risk has passed and soil exceeds 15°C. Space clumps 90cm apart — plants can reach 1.5m tall and wide. Water regularly (2.5–4cm per week) but avoid waterlogging. Feed with a balanced 10-10-10 or nitrogen-rich fertilizer monthly during the growing season. Before first frost, dig and divide clumps, pot divisions, and bring indoors to a bright, warm spot.
