Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Limes are the most cold-sensitive of the common citrus, requiring frost-free conditions and abundant heat to produce their best fruit. Persian (Tahitian) lime is the most widely grown and most cold-tolerant option; Key lime requires truly tropical conditions. In zones 9–11, plant in the ground in well-drained soil with pH 5.5–6.5. In cooler zones, plant in large containers (minimum 50L) with citrus potting mix, moving indoors before temperatures drop below 7°C. Limes need full sun for at least 8 hours. Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks in the growing season. Water deeply when the top 3cm of soil is dry. Persian limes are triploid and seedless (self-sterile) but still productive. Key limes set fruit more freely in tropical heat. Prune only to remove dead wood and crossing branches; avoid heavy pruning which delays fruiting.
