Luffa (Luffa aegyptiaca) is a fast-growing tropical gourd that requires a long, hot growing season — ideally 150+ frost-free days with temperatures consistently above 15°C. Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost in peat pots (luffa resents root disturbance) at 24–27°C; seeds germinate in 7–14 days. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to speed germination. Transplant into rich, deeply worked soil at pH 6.0–6.8 with generous compost once all frost risk has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 15°C. Space plants 90 cm–1.2 m apart along a sturdy trellis — mature luffa vines reach 5–9 m and bear heavy fruits. Water consistently and deeply; luffa is a heavy feeder and drinker.
