Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Lychee (Litchi chinensis) is slow to establish but exceptionally productive once mature. It requires well-draining, slightly acidic, deep loamy soil with a pH of 5.5–6.5. Plant grafted trees in a full-sun position sheltered from strong winds. Space trees 8–10 metres apart as they develop large canopies. Water deeply and regularly during establishment and fruit development — irregular watering during fruit swelling causes fruit splitting. Mature trees need a distinct cool, dry period of 6–8 weeks in winter (temperatures 10–20°C) to initiate flower buds — without this chilling period, flowering is poor. Feed with a balanced fertiliser quarterly; increase potassium and reduce nitrogen in autumn to encourage flower initiation. Pruning is minimal — remove crossing branches and dead wood. The tree is highly sensitive to waterlogging; plant on a slight slope or mound if drainage is suspect.
