Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Mangoes are tropical trees that require year-round warmth, dislike temperatures below 10°C, and need a distinct dry season to trigger flowering. In zones 10–12, plant grafted trees in the ground in the largest available sunny, well-drained location. Mangoes grow to 10m or more — select dwarf varieties for home gardens. Soil pH should be 5.5–7.5; they tolerate a wide range. Plant on a slight mound for drainage. Young trees need protection from frost; mature trees tolerate brief periods to 0°C. Feed with a high-phosphorus fertilizer during the first 2 years to promote root development, transitioning to a low-nitrogen formulation as trees mature — excess nitrogen promotes lush vegetative growth at the expense of flowering. Water regularly in the dry season but stop or greatly reduce irrigation for 6–8 weeks before the expected flowering period to stress the tree into bloom. Container-grown dwarf varieties can be managed for size with aggressive pruning.
