Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Okra is a true heat lover from the mallow family — it stalls below 18°C and thrives above 27°C. Soak seeds in water for 12–24 hours before sowing to soften the hard seed coat and speed germination. Direct sow 2–3 seeds per hole, 2.5cm deep, after soil has warmed to at least 21°C, thinning to 45–60cm spacing in rows 90cm apart. Okra tolerates a range of soil types but prefers well-drained sandy loam with pH 6.0–6.8. Incorporate balanced compost before planting. Feed at planting with 10-10-10 fertilizer, then switch to a low-nitrogen formula once flowering begins — excess nitrogen produces lush foliage but few pods. Water at 2.5–4cm per week; drought stress causes tough, fibrous pods. In containers, use a minimum 20L pot. Okra plants can exceed 180cm — stake or cage tall varieties.
