Papayas are fast-growing tropical perennials that can fruit within 9–12 months from seed. They thrive above 15°C and are killed by frost. Plant seeds directly (3 per hole) or start in biodegradable pots indoors. Papaya plants are male, female, or hermaphrodite (bisexual) — hermaphrodite plants are preferred as they self-pollinate and produce the best commercial fruit. Thin to the strongest plant once sex is determined at first flowering. Plant in the sunniest, most sheltered location in well-drained, light, fertile soil with pH 5.5–7.0. Papayas will not tolerate waterlogged roots even briefly — plant on raised mounds. Feed heavily with a balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season; they are among the most nutrient-demanding of all tropical fruits. Water consistently and deeply. In containers, papayas fruit but require large pots (80–100L minimum) and frequent repotting.
