Passiflora species are vigorous climbing vines requiring sturdy support structures — wire trellises, pergolas, or chain link fences are ideal. They prefer well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen, which produces excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers and fruit. Plant in full sun in a sheltered position; most species resent cold, drying winds. Water regularly during the growing season but allow some drying between waterings — roots are susceptible to rot in constantly wet soil. Feed with a tomato-type fertiliser (high potassium) monthly during the flowering season. Passiflora caerulea is the hardiest species, surviving to –10°C when established with crown protection; tropical species such as P. edulis require minimum 10°C. Prune in early spring, removing the previous year's spent flowering shoots by two-thirds to stimulate vigorous new growth on which flowers form.
