Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Passion fruit is a vigorous, fast-growing tropical vine capable of covering a large trellis in a single season. It produces on young wood and can fruit within a year of planting. Grow from seed (scarify first) or cuttings in warm-climate gardens (zones 9–12) or under glass. Plant in well-drained, fertile soil with pH 6.0–7.0. Install a very strong trellis — mature vines are extremely heavy. Passion fruit vines need cross-pollination in many varieties but are buzzed by native bees in warm climates. Feed with a high-potassium, low-nitrogen fertilizer — excess nitrogen causes lush foliage with few flowers. Water deeply and regularly (2.5–4cm per week) but never allow the roots to sit in water. After the main fruiting season, prune hard (by one-third) to encourage fresh productive growth. In cooler climates, grow in large containers and bring indoors for winter.
