Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) is a low-growing, spreading member of the mint family that prefers moist, fertile soil at pH 6.0–7.0 and thrives in partial shade — one of the few strongly aromatic herbs that tolerates less than full sun. It spreads vigorously by runners and can become invasive in favorable conditions; contain in buried pots or raised beds as you would for other mints. Plant divisions or rooted cuttings (seed germination is slow) 30 cm apart in spring. Water regularly to maintain consistently moist but not waterlogged conditions. Mow or shear periodically to encourage compact, bushy growth and prevent flowering if fresh leaf production is the goal. Pennyroyal releases its insect-repellent oils most effectively when leaves are bruised or walked on, making it useful as a pathway edging plant in cottage gardens. IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Pennyroyal is toxic if ingested in quantity. It was historically used as an abortifacient and can cause serious liver and kidney damage. It should NEVER be consumed as a tea, supplement, or essential oil. It is for external use only as an insect repellent.
