Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Physalis (Physalis peruviana — cape gooseberry, or P. pruinosa — ground cherry) thrives in well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost in trays at 20–24°C soil temperature, as germination is slow and the plant needs a long season. Transplant after the last frost into a full-sun position, spacing plants 60–90 cm apart. Physalis is a sprawling plant (60–120 cm) that benefits from a light cage or stake for support. Water moderately — it tolerates dry spells better than most fruiting crops and over-watering promotes disease. Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser at transplanting, then switch to a low-nitrogen, high-potassium formula at flowering. Mulch the soil surface to retain moisture. The papery husk that encloses each berry is the most distinctive feature — it turns from green to pale tan-brown at maturity and is not edible.
