Tropical bromeliad. A warmth-loving plant that does best between 22°C and 32°C, pineapple adapts well to tropical and subtropical conditions but cannot tolerate frost. Give it full sun (6-8 hours of direct light daily) and minimal watering — it prefers dry conditions between drinks, and expect to harvest in roughly 545-730 days. Growing your own means harvesting at perfect ripeness, something commercial growers simply cannot match.

Expert Tips

Root the crown. Takes 18-24 months to fruit. Wait until soil warms to at least 22°C before transplanting outdoors — cold soil stunts growth and can invite root rot. Overwatering is the most common mistake. Let soil dry out between waterings and ensure drainage is excellent.

Did You Know?

  • 🌱 Pineapple loves the heat! It thrives in tropical and subtropical climates year-round.

  • 🌱 Pineapple is drought-tolerant — perfect for gardeners who tend to forget watering!

Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Pineapples are terrestrial bromeliads that grow as rosettes and fruit only once per mother plant, then produce ratoon shoots (pups) for subsequent crops. Grow in zones 11–12 year-round outdoors or as a container plant in warmer rooms. Root the crown of a store-bought pineapple by removing the lower leaves, allowing to dry for a week, then planting in well-drained, sandy, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5). Position in full sun — maximum light is critical. Pineapples are surprisingly drought-tolerant with their central cup trapping water. Water by filling the central cup and lightly moistening the soil. Feed with a dilute foliar spray of liquid fertilizer monthly — they absorb nutrients through their leaves as well as roots. To force flowering on a reluctant plant, expose to ethylene gas by enclosing in a plastic bag with a ripe apple for 4–5 days. Plants take 18–24 months from rooting to first fruit.

Common Pests & Problems

Mealy bugs (Dysmicoccus brevipes) are the most serious pineapple pest — they colonize roots and leaf bases transmitting mealybug wilt virus, which causes leaf tips to turn red then brown as the whole plant wilts and dies; apply neem oil drench to the root zone and treat foliage with insecticidal soap. Heart rot (Phytophthora nicotianae) causes the central developing leaves and growing heart to rot with a foul odor — caused by overwatering or soil splash during heavy rain; treat with metalaxyl-based fungicide and improve drainage. Root rot from Pythium species follows the same pattern as heart rot and is prevented identically.

Harvest & Storage

A pineapple is ripe when the base of the fruit has turned from green to gold or orange, the fruit smells strongly sweet at the base, and it sounds hollow when tapped. The topmost leaves should pull out with slight resistance. Leave on the plant as long as possible for maximum sugar development. Cut from the plant with a sharp knife leaving a short stub. Store at room temperature for 2–3 days to improve sweetness, then refrigerate for up to 5 days. Once cut, refrigerate covered for 3–5 days.

Popular Varieties

"Smooth Cayenne" is the global commercial standard — large, cylindrical, golden flesh, low fiber, and very high juice content; the variety most likely found in stores. "Red Spanish" is the dominant variety in the Caribbean — slightly smaller, more fibrous, with a tart, aromatic flavor and better fresh-eating texture in the tropics. "Sugarloaf" (Pérola) is the most popular Brazilian variety — pale yellow flesh with exceptional sweetness, low acidity, and a creamy, melt-in-the-mouth texture. "Queen" pineapples are small, crisp, and intensely sweet — the preferred fresh-market variety in South Africa and Australia.
