Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Raspberries are divided into summer-bearing (floricane) and everbearing/fall-bearing (primocane) types — understanding this distinction is essential to correct pruning. Plant bare-root canes in early spring in well-drained, fertile loam with pH 5.8–6.5. Space 45–60cm apart in rows 1.8m wide along a support trellis of two horizontal wires at 60cm and 120cm height. Raspberries will not tolerate waterlogged roots — raised beds dramatically improve performance in heavy soils. Incorporate generous compost at planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer each spring. Water consistently at 2.5–4cm per week. Summer-bearers: prune out all canes that fruited immediately after harvest; leave new primocanes. Everbearers: for two crops, leave canes; for a single large fall crop, cut all canes to the ground in late winter.
