Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Snapdragons prefer a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH of 6.2–7.0 with excellent drainage and high organic content. Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost date — seeds need light to germinate, so press them onto the surface of moist seed-starting mix without covering. Transplant outdoors when temperatures stay above 40°F consistently. Space dwarf varieties 6 inches apart, tall cutting types 12 inches apart. Plant at the same depth as the nursery cell. Water at the base to keep foliage dry and prevent rust. Keep soil evenly moist, roughly 1 inch of water per week. When plants reach 3–4 inches, pinch the growing tip — this single action determines whether you get a single tall spike or a branching, multi-stemmed plant ideal for cut flowers. Feed with a balanced fertilizer at planting, then switch to a low-nitrogen fertilizer as buds form to channel energy into blooms rather than foliage.
