Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Sweet corn demands rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8 and high nitrogen fertility. Till in 10 cm of compost and a balanced starter fertilizer before planting. Sow seeds 2.5 cm deep and 25–30 cm apart in rows spaced 75–90 cm apart. Critically, plant in blocks of at least 4 rows rather than single rows to ensure adequate wind pollination — poor pollination causes missing kernels. Direct sow only after soil temperature reaches 16°C minimum. Water consistently at 25–30 mm per week, especially critical during tasseling and ear fill — moisture stress at silking directly causes poor kernel set. Side-dress with high-nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate or blood meal) when plants reach knee height and again when tassels emerge. Avoid wetting the foliage; drip irrigation is ideal. Succession plant every 2 weeks for continuous harvest.
