Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Taro (Colocasia esculenta) thrives in rich, moisture-retentive soil with a pH of 5.5–7.0. Incorporate heavy amounts of organic matter — rotted manure or compost — to create the fertile, moist conditions the plant requires. Plant corms or corm sections 5–7 cm deep and 45–60 cm apart, with rows 90 cm apart. Partial shade is tolerated and often beneficial in hot climates, reducing water stress. Taro is a heavy feeder; apply a nitrogen-rich balanced fertiliser monthly, supplemented with potassium to encourage corm development. Water consistently and copiously — taro originated in wetland environments and tolerates standing water. In tropical wet conditions it can be grown in flooded paddies. Container culture is feasible in large pots kept in trays of water. Mulch heavily to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.
