Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Turmeric is a rhizomatous tropical plant closely related to ginger, with similar growing requirements but a preference for slightly more shade. Plant fresh, plump rhizomes with visible buds in spring after the last frost, when soil is consistently above 20°C. Place horizontally 5–8cm deep, 30–45cm apart, in deeply enriched, loose, well-drained soil with pH 5.5–7.0 amended with generous compost. Turmeric performs best in partial shade (2–4 hours direct sun) in hot climates and full sun in temperate ones. It requires consistent moisture — 2.5–4cm per week — especially as the rhizomes are swelling in summer. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer or work in aged manure at planting. The plant produces spectacular tropical foliage 60–90cm tall. Harvest signals: when leaves and stems begin to yellow and die back, usually after the first light frost in temperate climates. Entire rhizome clumps are dug and replanted annually outside tropical zones.
