Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Verbena (Verbena x hybrida and related species) thrives in well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–8.0. It strongly dislikes waterlogged soil — excellent drainage is more important than soil richness. Plant in full sun with 20–30 cm spacing for ground-cover types, or 30–45 cm for upright varieties. Start from transplants after the last frost in cold climates, or direct sow indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost at 18–22°C — seeds can be slow and erratic to germinate. Water moderately at the base of plants; wet foliage promotes powdery mildew. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser or use slow-release granules at planting. Deadhead spent flower clusters regularly — this is essential for maintaining continuous bloom from spring through autumn. Verbena performs exceptionally well in containers, hanging baskets, and raised beds. In frost-free climates, it grows as a short-lived perennial.
