Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Chinese cabbage — specifically napa cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis) — is a cool-season crop that bolts rapidly in warm temperatures. Target soil temperatures of 45–75°F for planting. For best results, grow as a fall crop: transplant or direct sow 6–8 weeks before first expected fall frost. Soil should be deeply prepared, rich in organic matter, with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Work in generous compost before planting. Space transplants 12–15 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches apart. Plant at the same depth as the nursery cell. Water consistently — 1.5 inches per week — as moisture stress triggers bolting. Apply high-nitrogen fertilizer every 2–3 weeks; Chinese cabbage requires substantial nitrogen to form dense, heavy heads. Heads are ready to harvest in 50–70 days. In spring plantings, select bolt-resistant varieties and start early to stay ahead of heat.
