Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Kohlrabi is a cool-season brassica that bolts in heat, so time sowings for spring (4 weeks before last frost) or late summer for fall harvest. Direct sow or transplant into fertile, well-drained soil with pH 6.0–7.0, incorporating plenty of aged compost. Space plants 20–25cm apart in rows 40cm wide — crowding produces small, tough bulbs. Thin seedlings ruthlessly. Kohlrabi is a heavy feeder: apply a balanced granular fertilizer at planting and side-dress with nitrogen (blood meal or fish emulsion) 3 weeks after germination to push rapid, tender growth. Water consistently — 2.5–4cm per week — fluctuating moisture causes the swollen stem to crack. Mulch to keep roots cool. In mild climates, succession-plant every 3 weeks from early spring through early fall for continuous harvest.
