Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Mizuna (Brassica rapa var. nipposinica) is one of the fastest, most versatile salad greens available. It thrives in well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Direct sow from early spring through autumn, broadcasting seeds over a prepared seedbed or drilling in rows 20 cm apart at 0.5 cm depth. For baby leaf production, sow thickly at 1–2 cm apart and cut at 5 cm height. For full-sized rosettes, thin to 20–25 cm. Water regularly and evenly — drought stress triggers premature bolting. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks for continuous cut-and-come-again harvest. Mizuna tolerates light frost to –5°C, making it ideal for autumn and winter growing under low tunnels or cloches. In warm climates, it bolts rapidly in temperatures above 25°C; choose shade-cloth-protected beds in summer. Succession sow every 3 weeks for uninterrupted supply.
