Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) are the ideal beginner orchid — they tolerate typical home conditions and rebloom reliably. Plant in specialized orchid bark mix (never regular potting soil) in a clear plastic pot with abundant drainage holes, which lets you monitor root health. pH should be 5.5–6.5. Place in bright indirect light — an east-facing windowsill is ideal; direct sun scorches the thick leaves. Water by placing the pot in a basin of room-temperature water for 15–20 minutes, then drain completely — roots should approach silvery-gray before the next watering, typically every 7–10 days in summer, every 14 days in winter. Never let the plant sit in standing water. Feed with a diluted orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 at quarter-strength) every other watering during active growth, monthly in winter. After the flower spike finishes, cut it above a lower node — a secondary spike often emerges. To trigger reflowering, expose plants to 55–60°F nights for 4–6 weeks in fall, mimicking the natural temperature drop of their native habitat.
