Step-by-Step Growing Guide

Tatsoi (Brassica rapa var. narinosa) is a flat-growing, cold-hardier-than-most Asian green forming attractive dark green rosettes at ground level. It prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Direct sow from late summer through autumn (or early spring) at 0.5 cm depth in rows 30 cm apart, thinning to 20–25 cm for full rosettes. For baby leaf production, broadcast thickly and harvest with scissors at 5–7 cm. Water evenly and consistently — drought stress triggers bolting. Apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser every 2–3 weeks for the fastest growth. Tatsoi is genuinely cold-hardy, surviving temperatures down to –10°C under snow, which actually enhances its flavour by converting starches to sugars. In summer, it bolts quickly above 25°C; grow in light shade or restrict to autumn/spring/winter cycles. Growth slows dramatically in cold but never stops entirely.

Common Pests & Problems

Flea beetles are the primary pest, particularly damaging seedlings with characteristic small round holes; immediately cover newly sown beds with fine insect mesh. Cabbage aphids cluster in the crown of the rosette, protected from spray contact; part the leaves and apply neem oil directly to the crown. Full rosettes are harvested at 40–45 days by cutting the whole plant at soil level. Tatsoi stores extremely well compared to other salad greens — refrigerated in a sealed bag, harvested rosettes keep for 7–10 days while maintaining texture and mild flavour. Baby leaves are best used within 3–5 days. Tatsoi can be frozen by blanching briefly in boiling water and refreshing in ice water, then freezing flat — it holds its texture well in cooked applications after freezing.

Popular Varieties

Regular Tatsoi (the standard species type) produces a flat, spreading rosette of glossy, very dark green spoon-shaped leaves; the most widely grown form in both commercial production and home gardens. Yukina Savoy is a related type with more crinkled, savoyed (puckered) leaves and a slightly more robust celery-like flavour, slower to bolt than standard tatsoi. Baby Tatsoi Mix is a seed company blend combining standard tatsoi with related Asian greens for baby leaf production, creating varied leaf shapes in a single harvest.
