Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Wasabi (Wasabia japonica) is among the most demanding culinary plants to cultivate. It requires consistently cool temperatures of 8–20°C, high humidity, and constant access to clean, cold, moving water or reliably moist shade. Soil must be rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0–7.0, extremely well-draining yet permanently moist — a contradiction achieved best in natural stream margins or by constructing a gravel-bed channel with gentle water flow. In garden cultivation without a stream, recreate conditions by planting in deep shade, mulching heavily with leaf mould, and misting daily. Space plants 30 cm apart. Feed very lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly — overfeeding produces excessive leaf growth at the expense of rhizome development. The rhizome takes 18–24 months to reach harvestable size. Protect from temperatures above 22°C as heat causes immediate decline.
