Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Parsley is a biennial herb typically grown as an annual that is notoriously slow to germinate — expect 2–4 weeks even under ideal conditions at soil temperature of 18–24°C. Soaking seeds overnight in warm water dramatically improves germination speed. Sow 6mm deep in fertile, well-drained soil at pH 6.0–7.0 amended with compost. Thin to 20–25cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Parsley develops a deep taproot and resents transplanting — direct sowing is strongly preferred. Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist — 2.5cm per week — as drought stress triggers premature bolting in the second season. Feed every 3–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser (10-10-10) to support continuous leaf production through the season. In its second year, parsley will flower and set seed then die — allow one plant to self-seed for naturalised volunteers. Grow in partial shade in hot climates to delay bolting.
