Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Tiger lily (Lilium lancifolium) is one of the most forgiving of all lilies. Plant bulbs in autumn at a depth of three times the bulb's diameter — typically 15–20 cm deep — in well-draining, slightly acidic soil with pH 6.0–6.5. Space bulbs 30–45 cm apart. Improve heavy clay soil with grit and compost; bulbs rot in waterlogged ground. Full sun to dappled afternoon shade is tolerated. Once growth emerges in spring, water moderately — weekly in dry spells — and feed monthly with a low-nitrogen, high-potassium tomato fertiliser from shoot emergence through blossom. Unlike most lilies, tiger lily produces small dark bulbils in the leaf axils along the stem; these can be collected and grown on as free propagules. Stems may reach 1.5 metres; stake in exposed positions. After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally to replenish the bulb.
