Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) is a climbing tropical orchid — the only orchid producing an economically important food product and arguably the world's most labor-intensive spice. In cultivation, it requires a warm (18–30°C), humid, sheltered environment with partial shade (40–50% shade) and a support for climbing — trees, poles, or a trellis. Plant cuttings (30–60cm lengths with at least 4 nodes) in a well-drained, orchid-appropriate growing medium: bark chips, coarse perlite, and minimal organic matter, with pH 5.5–6.5. Vanilla is an epiphytic plant with aerial roots that need to grip surfaces — attach to support with soft ties. Water when the growing medium approaches dryness; never waterlog. Feed fortnightly with a dilute balanced orchid fertilizer. Vines begin flowering in 3–4 years. The small, greenish-yellow flowers are open for only one day and must be hand-pollinated by transferring pollen with a toothpick or small brush.
